My profile

Matthew Byng, Dip in Person-Centred Counselling, MBACP (Accred),  EMDR UK Accredited Practitioner, Dip in Counselling Supervision.

Whether I am working as a person-centred counsellor, EMDR practitioner or supervisor, I believe that when offered the right non-judgmental, empathic and authentic conditions, a therapeutic relationship can be created between the two of us in the room where amazing work can take place. Here we will find the answers to the problems and challenges that we face.

As a counsellor, I don’t offer advice but work with you to resolve your issues in ways that meet your needs. You will be able to explore what influences the way you are in the world. Many of them acquired when you were young, may no longer be valid. They will weaken as you identify them, allowing you to live in a way that is closer to your core self.

At the centre of EMDR is the 8 phase ‘standard protocol’ that includes recalling the traumatic memory together with bilateral stimulation (left right movements), often but not always, eye movements.  This releases the brain to process traumatic feelings that may have remained alive and powerful for decades after the event that gave rise to them. EMDR can change parts of our organism that are beyond the reach of counselling and psychotherapy. It can process your disturbing past events into memories that will no longer distress you.

I also offer the EMDR Flash Technique in which the most painful traumas can be processed without the need to dwell directly on these distressing events.

I see clients for counselling and EMDR and also supervisees online and face-to-face.

I now work only in private practice. In the past I taught the Counselling Level 4 at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College for 10 years and worked in rehab with clients in the early stages of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction for 13 years. I am a boarding school survivor and work well with clients still impacted by this trauma.

As an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy I am bound by the BACP’s Ethical Framework.
