Matthew Byng – Accredited Counsellor MBACP

Dip in Person-Centred Counselling, MBACP (Accred), Dip in Counselling Supervision

Welcome! Whether I’m working as a person-centred counsellor, implementing the EMDR protocol, or offerig supervision, my approach is rooted in the belief that the right therapeutic relationship can unlock the transformative power of healing. By offering a non-judgmental, empathic, and authentic space, I offer an environment where the challenges you face can be explored with understanding, leading to insightful resolutions and lasting change.

A collaborative, person-centred approach

In my role as a counsellor, I don’t offer advice or quick fixes. Instead, I partner with you to uncover your own solutions. Together, we’ll explore the patterns and influences that have shaped your life—many of which were formed during childhood and may no longer be in your best interests. As we work to identify and challenge these outdated beliefs, you’ll find yourself reconnecting with your core self, empowering you to live with greater authenticity and peace.

EMDR: transforming trauma into strength

I also offer a specialized treatment that can help you process deep-seated emotional pain. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works through an 8-phase protocol that uses bilateral stimulation—typically eye movements—to help the brain process unresolved trauma. This approach allows us to reframe distressing memories, transforming them into neutral experiences that no longer carry the emotional weight they once did. EMDR has the ability to work on aspects of trauma that may be beyond the reach of traditional talk therapy.

For those facing particularly painful traumas, I also offer the EMDR Flash Technique, which allows us to process distressing memories without the need to focus directly on the painful events themselves. This gentle approach can be a powerful tool for healing, especially for individuals who can feel overwhelmed by the intensity of their experiences.

For 10 years I have been an accredited practitioner with EMDR UK, the professional body for EMDR therapists. At the end of 2025 I decided to let this status lapse and not apply for reaccreditation because I am older now and towards the end of my career in therapy. This will not change the way I work or what I offer my clients. I will continue to offer EMDR and to attend monthly supervision with the very experienced EMDR consultant with whom I have been working for many years.

I will remain an accredited member of BACP.

A background in recovery and healing

I now focus exclusively on private practice, offering counselling, EMDR, and supervision both online and in person. Before this, I spent 10 years teaching Counselling Level 4 at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, and 13 years working in residential rehab with clients in the early stages of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the complexities of recovery and healing, and I bring that expertise into my practice.

As a boarding school survivor, I have a particular sensitivity to the unique challenges facing clients affected by this trauma. I am experienced in working with individuals still impacted by their boarding school experiences, helping them navigate the emotional scars that may linger long after leaving school.

Ethical and professional standards

I am an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their Ethical Framework to ensure the highest level of professional integrity and care.

If you are ready for the next step in your journey toward healing, I invite you to connect with me. Together, we can create the space for your growth, healing, and transformation.
